About Jacob Isager. Jacob Isager.
London: Routledge, ISBN The author is a member of the Department of Classical Studies at Odense University; the book was translated from Danish for publication. As a textual scholar Isager is not interested in producing a thorough commentary on Pliny's treatment of art throughout the NaturaL History, whether by compiling mention of individual artifacts, artists or classes of manufacturing. He does not aim either to dissect systematically Pliny's congruence with and departures from his inherited sources for art-historical evidence and stylistic categorization, material and rhetorical.
Instead, Isager pursues an internal structural critique of the arrangcment of the material contained in those books , "on minerals" of the N H in which Pliny's primary art-historical synopses are located. This critique is located in the context of Pliny's broad aims as author and as actor in tllC governing Roman elite, set against the background of the epistuLa praeJatoria and the programmatic statements on nature and human artificc which characteristically introduce earlier books in the NH and recur as topoi throughout, ending with the prayer to Nature that closes tlle last "arthistorical " book 35 and with it the encyclopedia.
Pliny the Elder
The NH is our sole surviving text to preserve-like a fly in amber-the traces of the art-historical literature of antiquity. What we might call the factoids of Books of the NH have been consistently and thoroughly mined and annotated by generations of art historians, who have appraised also with varying degrees of sophistication Pliny's presentation of art-historical chronologies and esthetic systems of appraisal; much of this has been sensitive and to the point.
Anyone datum, problem or theme needs, however, to be set in the context of Pliny's internal aims and premises, and what Isager does is give the first step towards outlining the background structure. One cannot assess the weight of what Pliny does or does not say in anyone particular case without awareness of his own principles of inclusion, or of those of his sources; though this is only sporadically lsager's concern, his outline will serve well those trying to take such source criticism further.
